Gutmicrobiotachangesplayakeyroleinthepathogenesisofhepaticencephalopathy(HE).Fecalmicrobiotatransplantation(FMT)isanefficientwaytomanipulatethegutmicrobiota.SuccessfulclinicalapplicationofFMTfortreatingHEwasfirstreportedin.ThisreviewcollectstheexperimentalandclinicalevidencethatsupportstheuseofFMTinthetreatmentofHE.PossibleunderlyingmechanismsofFMTtreatingHEincluderestorationoftheimpairedgut-liver-brainaxis,aswellasreductionofammoniaproduction,systemicinflammationandblood-brainbarrierpermeability.
